Your Guide to Christmas Weight Management

In our last blog post we looked at home gyms vs commercial gyms, and why I feel that most people suit commercial gyms better. This week we’re sharing your guide to Christmas weight management.

Your Guide to Christmas Weight Management

Question: I’ve been dieting and exercising for 4 months and am really pleased with my progress. But the holiday season is coming up and I’m in two minds as to what to do. Should I keep dieting throughout the holidays or have some time off and recover afterwards?

Answer: I think that the problem here is that the fitness industry has had two very polarising responses to the holiday season. The first response is that you should stick to your diet at all costs, and that holidays should be ignored. Your body comes first.

The second response, which is more of a reaction to the first. Is that you should eat whatever you want during the holidays and then come back refreshed in January. Very rarely do I hear anyone talking about a middle-ground. Which is where you eat more than usual on the holidays themselves, but stay close to your diet on the in-between days.

Gaining Over Christmas

Last year, I gained 3kg over the Xmas and New Year period. Which is a lot to gain in a short amount of time (0.5kg per day). It took me 6 weeks to get back to my pre-Xmas weight. Is that a good trade? I’m unconvinced.

But I’m also unconvinced that avoiding eating delicious food with my family and not going to the pub with my dad would be a fun way to end the year. I love Xmas, I love spending time with my family, and food and drink are a big part of that.

What I WILL try to avoid this year though, is the bad eating practices that I employ from December 26th to December 31st. Instead, I will plan out my meals in advance, and ensure that my fridge isn’t packed full of temptations like it was last year. Eating 6 mince pies for breakfast and cracking open 6 cans of lager in the evening isn’t going to fly in 2024!

Eat Well & Exercise Regularly

I guess my answer here is:

Have fun during Thanksgiving. Have fun at Xmas, and have fun on New Year’s Eve

But eat well and exercise regularly during those days. Don’t let them all blend into one large period of excess. Or ignore my advice, have an absolute blast and come back stronger next year. It really is up to you.

But I don’t want to hear any stories about whey protein shake breakfasts on Christmas Day!
