This week, I\u2019m answering a question that almost everyone faces when they return to the gym. &#8220;What&#8217;s the best way to deal with sore muscles after a workout?&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"750\" data-end=\"816\">What\u2019s the best way to deal with sore muscles after a workout?<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"818\" data-end=\"959\"><strong data-start=\"818\" data-end=\"831\">Question: I\u2019ve started going back to the gym recently, and after my first workout my muscles were screaming. What can I do to fix this?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"961\" data-end=\"1184\"><strong data-start=\"961\" data-end=\"972\">Answer: <\/strong>Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) is an inevitable and frustrating part of returning to training. We all know that regular exercise is good for us, so it can feel unfair when your body refuses to cooperate.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1186\" data-end=\"1397\">Sadly, there isn\u2019t a secret method to completely avoid DOMS that\u2019s known only to personal trainers. However, after working with a lot of clients over the years, I <em data-start=\"1349\" data-end=\"1353\">do<\/em> know a few ways to reduce how bad it feels.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1399\" data-end=\"1524\">One of the most important things you can do is clean up your lifestyle for the first few days after you start training again.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1526\" data-end=\"1846\">That means not going to the pub for six pints, not staying up until 3am playing on your PS5, and not scheduling something incredibly stressful for the day after your first workout. What you want is plenty of sleep, no alcohol, and as little stress as possible. These won\u2019t prevent DOMS, but they can reduce its severity.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1848\" data-end=\"2062\">For leg soreness specifically, walking can help. Going for a long-ish walk after your first leg workout can reduce how intense DOMS feels. In my experience, this doesn\u2019t work nearly as well for upper body soreness.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2064\" data-end=\"2281\">That said, if you do this <em data-start=\"2090\" data-end=\"2104\">all the time<\/em>, muscle growth may be slightly reduced. This could include walking, yoga, light bodyweight exercises, or even an easy jog. The goal is to increase circulation so your muscles receive more blood flow and nutrients.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2561\" data-end=\"2717\">It\u2019s important to remember that active rest is not the same as a normal workout. The intensity should be low, and the duration short, unless you\u2019re walking.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2719\" data-end=\"2935\">Over-the-counter anti-inflammatories like aspirin or ibuprofen can slightly reduce soreness. Personally, I only use them when DOMS is particularly bad and I need to recover quickly for my weekly football humiliation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2937\" data-end=\"3154\">Sports massages are harder to judge. The research doesn\u2019t strongly support their effectiveness, but many professional athletes still use them. That suggests they <em data-start=\"3099\" data-end=\"3104\">may<\/em> help some people, even if the science is unclear.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3156\" data-end=\"3401\">Epsom salt baths are often recommended for DOMS. I\u2019ve tried them myself and can\u2019t say for sure whether they make a direct difference. However, they\u2019re relaxing and tend to improve sleep, which <em data-start=\"3349\" data-end=\"3355\">does<\/em> help recovery, so they\u2019re still worth trying.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3403\" data-end=\"3578\">Foam rollers don\u2019t seem to be as effective as people claim, and I\u2019m also unsure about massage guns. Still, if you find they help you personally, there\u2019s no harm in using them.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3580\" data-end=\"3788\">Finally, hydration matters. Drink plenty of water, as dehydration can worsen DOMS.
