I was checking my phone when an older guy came up to me and told me to put it away and lift. He was sort of joking, sort of not joking. Was he right? Should I have shorter rest periods between sets?<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"299\" data-end=\"462\">Answer: Firstly, the phone in the gym issue is so silly, so let&#8217;s tackle that first.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"563\" data-end=\"595\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Phone_in_the_Gym_Debate\"><\/span>The Phone in the Gym Debate<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"597\" data-end=\"844\">Here\u2019s a real example. You\u2019re in the gym, mid-session. You finish a set of dumbbell bench press and sit down. You pull out your phone while you recover. Then an older guy comes up and tells you to put it away and lift. Half joking, half serious.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"846\" data-end=\"905\">Was he right? Should you rest for less time between sets?<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"907\" data-end=\"957\">The truth: the phone isn\u2019t the problem. Rest is.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"959\" data-end=\"1166\">The important thing is <strong data-start=\"982\" data-end=\"1003\">how long you rest<\/strong>, not what you do while resting. Sure, you might get distracted scrolling and rest too long. But the bigger issue most lifters have? <strong data-start=\"1136\" data-end=\"1164\">Not resting long enough.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" data-start=\"959\" data-end=\"1166\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.primemale.com\/articles\/how-to-grow-big-legs\/\">How to Grow Big Legs (If You Hate Leg Day)<\/a><\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1173\" data-end=\"1199\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Ideal_Rest_Period\"><\/span>The Ideal Rest Period<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1201\" data-end=\"1314\">Research has shown for years that the best rest period for building muscle and strength is <strong data-start=\"1292\" data-end=\"1307\">3\u20135 minutes<\/strong> [1].<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1316\" data-end=\"1478\">Less rest can feel intense. But if you don\u2019t recover properly, your performance in the next set drops. Lifting less weight or hitting fewer reps slows progress.\u00a0The best approach is to <strong data-start=\"1504\" data-end=\"1530\">time your rest periods<\/strong>. Aim for no less than 3 minutes and no more than 5 minutes.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1599\" data-end=\"1620\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Exercise_Matters\"><\/span>Exercise Matters<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1622\" data-end=\"1702\">Not all exercises need the same rest. Some muscles recover faster than others.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1704\" data-end=\"1869\">Personally, my hamstrings bounce back quickly from Romanian deadlifts. I can go again after just 90 seconds. But my biceps? They need a full 3 minutes after curls.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1871\" data-end=\"1957\">Listen to your body. But this varies. Fitness level, workout intensity, recovery strategies, and genetics all play a role.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2252\" data-end=\"2272\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Bottom_Line\"><\/span>The Bottom Line<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2274\" data-end=\"2320\">So, <strong data-start=\"2278\" data-end=\"2318\">how long should I rest between sets?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2322\" data-end=\"2562\">The evidence says 3\u20135 minutes is best for strength and muscle growth. But use that as a guideline, not a rule. Test different rest periods. Pay attention to your performance. That extra 60 seconds of recovery could make a huge difference.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2564\" data-end=\"2714\">And if you want to scroll through Instagram during your rest, go ahead.
